| "All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue
of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue
their economic, social and cultural development." 10 December
1966
On December 10, 1966, the United Nations General Assembly adopted two
"International Covenants" (agreements) on Human Rights, one dealing with
Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the other dealing with Civil and
Political Rights. Both of these Covenants support the right of all
peoples to self-determination: a peoples' right to freely determine
their political status in life, no matter where they may reside.
These Covenants are the instruments by which the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights can have legal as well as moral force.
Grassroots Movement View on Self-Determination
Since we were taken from our Motherland, Afrika, hundreds of years ago,
our people have pursued three main paths to insure Justice, Freedom, and
respect for our Human Rights in this land:
1. Repatriation. The desire to go back to Afrika has always
had a place among the segment of our people, from the first days of our
forced journey aboard the slave ships, to the present. The Malcolm
X Grassroots Movement supports this expression of Self-Determination.
2. Integration. Many of our people, from the beginning of
our exile in this land to now, feel that America must be changed from a
mostly white state (government) to a multi-racial one nation where no one
will be discriminated against because of race. We also support this
expression of Self-Determination.
3. Independent Nationhood. The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement,
while supporting all of our peoples' expressions of Self-Determination,
feels that the Black Nation in North America has the democratic right to
make a choice about it's future. We believe that our Nation has a
right to Independence and Self-Government, on land that our people have
lived on for generations, which is the best way of creating a society free
of the suffering we've endured for over 300 years.
The main International Law agreements which support the Black Nation's
right to independence are:
United Nations General Assembly Resolution #1541,
14 December 1960 ("Declaraton on the Granting of Independence
to Colonial Countries and Peoples.")
United Nations General Assembly Resolution #1541,
15 December 1960 ("Principles Which Should Guide Members...Under
Article 73(e) of the Charter")
United Nations General Assembly Resolution #2625,
24 October 1970 ("Declaration on the Principles of International
Law")
History and International Law are on the side of our people. The
only thing left to do now is to organize the masses of Afrikans in America
(Black folks) for true Self-Determination. In the final analysis,
whether one prefers integration, or going back to Afrika, or independent
nationhood, Self-Determination is a Human Right which we must bring into
existence for our people in this country. The Malcolm X Grassroots
Movement is committed to organizing our people to do just that. |
